The bulk of the collection, twenty boxes, is periodicals that contain writing by or about James Merrill, most of which are referenced in Hagstrom’s bibliography. Some of these are the complete magazine or journal in which the article or poem appeared, while others are simply photocopies of the pages containing Merrill writings. There is also one box of booksellers’ catalogs with listings of Merrill books for sale. Many of these were books that Merrill inscribed to various people, and the inscriptions are reproduced in the catalogs.
The collection also includes several typescript drafts of the bibliography, as well as notes about writing the different sections of the bibliography. There are seven boxes of correspondence relating to the bibliography. This correspondence is primarily between Hagstrom and various publishers, editors, Merrill associates, and other parties who helped Hagstrom identify Merrill writings. There are also two sets of folders originally compiled by other people: bibliographer Mary Johnson and Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. poetry editor Harry Ford. Johnson’s material relate to a Merrill bibliography she was compiling, while Ford’s materials relate to James I. Merrill’s Knopf publications.
Personal correspondence in the collection includes several folders of letters from Merrill to Hagstrom, along with drafts or carbon copies of Hagstrom’s letters to Merrill. There are also folders of photocopied correspondence to and from Merrill to various associates, which Hagstrom collected from different sources. Notable correspondents in this group include Anaïs Nin, Richard Wilbur, and Bernard de Zogheb.

In turn, Merrill was extremely generous to others in the arts, establishing the Ingram Merrill Foundation, which awarded grants to artists and writers for over forty years.
