DMX control is usually achieved with a DMX console, similar to an audio board, or with DMX software on which a show can be recorded and scenes can be built and edited. This software is connected with a DMX USB interface that converts USB output to DMX output. Enttec Open Dmx USB (not recommended) Enttec USB DMX Pro (recommended) Dmx4all.de mini/nano usb dmx device. As I wrote, direct USB to DMX pigtail might be fine, but dot2 must recognize it to give you free DMX Universe 1 parameters. But it is only software, so the free Universe 1 is given via ethernet card of your PC/laptop, either inbuilt one or external. I have no info about USB and it is 99% wrong idea, because there must be driver and other.

The Open Lighting Project has moved!
We've launched our new site at www.openlighting.org. This wiki will remain and be updated with more technical information.

This documents the additional message types added to the EnttecDMX USB Pro protocol to support multiple device types. As the number of devices supporting the protocol grows, it becomes difficult for software like OLA to differentiate the device types. The Device Manufacturer & Device Name messages allow the host software to determine the device and know which set of messages it supports.

USB Serial Number

Enttec USB Pro devices have only started programming the serial numbers recently (>2008?).When using the standard USB Serial drivers on Mac & Linux, the host application doesn't have access to the serial numbers. This would require us to write our own USB drivers using libusb to expose this information.

Some devices don't support the Set Widget Parameters message so this isn't an option. Also it suffers from the bootstrapping issue, we need to know what device it is before we can write the information about what device it is...
